On Election of Melissa Mark-Viverito to Speaker of the New York City Council
"On behalf of One Percent for Culture, a coalition which includes 559 organizational and business partners, 61 prominent culture advocates on the campaigns Advisory Council, and more than 25,000 supporters, we congratulate Council Member Mark-Viverito on her election to City Council Speaker.
We commend Speaker Mark-Viverito for her visionary leadership as demonstrated by her early support of One Percent for Culture and our goal of increasing funding for the citys 1,300-plus cultural organizations to one percent of the municipal expense budget. We are fortunate that her commitment to culture is also mirrored by 75 percent of all New York City Council members.
We look forward to working with her and the entire Council to promote policies and legislation that ensure growth and support for the citys nonprofit cultural community including artists of all disciplines."
New York City is home to more than 1,300 cultural organizations and thousands of individual artists. New York City's cultural community is a broad spectrum that includes performing arts centers, dance troupes, orchestras, non-profit theater companies, museums, community arts programs, zoos, botanical gardens, and more.
Non-profit culture creates more than 120,000 jobs and generates $8.1 billion in economic activity. More than 24 million tourists are drawn to the citys world-class cultural offerings each year. Nonprofit culture also provides supplementary education to New Yorkers of all ages.
Over the past three years, One Percent for Culture has continued to grow and generate support for an increase in funding to New Yorks nonprofit cultural organization to one percent of the municipal expense budget annually. These organizations, although vital to the economic health and global competitiveness of the city, currently receive less than one quarter of one percent (0.22) of the municipal expense budget.
